About
Learn the basics of block printing, a two-thousand-year-old affordable and versatile relief printing technique that uses a carved material to transfer ink onto paper or fabric. Students will learn to transfer an image onto a lino block, use tools to carve, and make single-color prints on paper by hand. Leave with a carving tool, prints, and the know-how and inspiration to continue printing with minimal set-up from home! Class time includes a free visit to the Moab Museum to tour the Everett Ruess exhibit, featuring his block prints from the 1930s.
About the Instructor: Melisa Morgan (she/they) is a multimedia designer and artist from Flint, Michigan. Working largely by hand, Melisa’s practice utilizes a combination of printmaking, lettering, illustration, bookbinding, and social practice to explore symbolism, connection, and materiality as they relate to place, power, psychology and holistic wellness. She became enamored with printmaking while studying graphic design over a decade ago, and has since spent time as a screen printer, letterpress demonstrator, and at-home block printer. She currently serves as the Assistant Director of Moab Arts, a municipally run art center in Moab, Utah.
Class will be held in the Stage Room.
