Title: La Sal Mountains

Artist Statement:
Thirty million years ago, plumes of hot magma squeezed their way upwards into a host of sedimentary rocks that would later become the canyonlands. Over the last several million years, erosion has carved a network of labyrinths and tablelands. What was once deeply buried below has become islands in the sky, as the rocks born of fire stand the test of the ages better than the rocks below. These desert ranges serve as critical habitat and vitally important catchments for the all-but-elusive moisture in these dry, parched lands. The forest bears witness to the ever-changing light, at times peaceful, and at other times, violent and destructive. Swaths of trees cleared by millions of pounds of snow crashing down the mountain give hints of storms past. This photo was taken on February 8, 2021 and captures the North Face of Mann's Peak in the La Sal Mountains. Junction Butte and the rest of Canyonlands can be seen in the distance, with the Henry Mountains forming the distant skyline to the Southwest.
