Artist: Deborah McDermott
Artist Statement:
Deborah McDermott noticed lichen for the first time when she moved to Moab. On her walks
among the boulders at the base of the Moab Rim, she began taking close-up photos of lichens,
thinking that one day she might make some artwork based on them. So, after several years of
ruminating, she started making linocut monoprints and acrylic paintings inspired by shapes,
textures, and colors of lichens. The lichens are depicted many times larger than life size, making
it possible for her to see and paint their miniature structures, which Deborah thinks of as micro-
landscapes. " I love looking at maps and images that show our Earth from above. Looking at
lichen on rocks is a similar experience.
Deborah shows her work, including landscapes, at Gallery Moab, 59 S Main Street in Moab. A
portfolio of her work is on the website, gallerymoab.com, and she posts on Instagram
