MOAB ARTS REUSE RESIDENCY

MARR’s mission is to challenge today's waste-making culture by providing a unique platform for artists at the intersection of art, community, and waste systems. The Moab area is highly impacted by the tourism industry and, as a result, waste management. By facilitating artists’ direct engagement with the waste stream, MARR encourages resident artists to consider their studio practice through the lens of sustainability and to thoughtfully re-assess their processes of material sourcing and waste disposal.

Through a 4-week residency, the program offers housing for visiting artists, studio space, project and community facilitation, a stipend, and access to materials at local waste disposal sites. As a component of each residency, artists spend time providing opportunities for learning, dialog and enrichment within the community.

Materials are provided by Canyonlands Solid Waste Authority and WabiSabi Thrift Store. The residency program is generously supported by the NEA's Grants for Arts Projects program and general operating support funding from the Utah Division of Arts and Museums. Thank you to the Moab Museum for donating admission for 2023 resident artists.

The 2024 March Local Artist Residents: Jess Hough and Pete Apicella (aka PiMo)

Pete Apicella, PiMo

PiMo has been living a creative life in Moab for over 30 years, painting landscapes, DJing, curating themed events, and acting as the 2010 Community Arts in the Parks for Arches and Canyonlands. Finding and transforming abandoned debris into things of beauty and wonder serves as a redemptive pathway, both for the object and the self. Redesigning construction waste into urban art pieces is one way he respects the planet's limited resources, while honoring the labors of workers who toiled to fabricate and transport these pieces into our desert oasis. PiMo's goal is to improve community by turning overlooked, monotonous, public surfaces into art canvases.

Jess Hough

Jess is a part-time artist living full-time in Moab. For the past few years she’s been working on developing cheap, accessible methods for at-home intaglio printmaking with DIY art supplies and tools made from reclaimed/recycled materials. She brought her wonky printmaking setup outside last year as the 2023 community artist in the parks, making new projects inspired by the southeast Utah landscape and giving demos in our local national parks. This year she's working on developing new recycled papermaking tools to combine with the handmade print process.
