Artist Statement:
I grew up in Michigan and have always enjoyed nature and the outdoor life. I came to Utah in 1978 to work as a Student Conservation Association intern at Canyonlands National Park to satisfy a college degree requirement. This ended up being a turning point in my life, the start of my career with the National Park Service, and it ignited my love of the desert southwest. After working in four national parks, a national monument, and the Moab BLM Field Office, I retired from federal service in 2017.Since retiring in Moab, I have more time to follow artistic pursuits. This life-long hobby started when I took a variety of art classes in high school. Over the years I have worked in several mediums. In 2017, I took a basic pastel class offered through Moab Arts. Inspired, I attended several more pastel workshops. Working alongside other artists in the workshops and with the local Pastel Guild has encouraged and inspired me to continue pastel painting. I like the forgiving nature of pastels and the ability it allows me to define or redefine my work. I find inspiration all around me and especially enjoy painting scenes found in local national parks and on nearby public lands.
